I recently picked up a used 2021 Toyota Sienna XSE. It checks every box for a family hauler—great MPGs, tons of room, and sporty looks—except one: the audio. The stock 8-speaker non-JBL system is flat, muddy, and totally uninspiring.

I wanted concert-quality sound without losing any cargo space to a subwoofer box. Following the legendary build log by user ‘cowdog360’ on SiennaChat.com, I decided to tackle a full front-stage upgrade using his “killer value” equipment recommendations.

The Master Plan: Active Bi-Amplification

The secret sauce here isn’t just replacing speakers; it’s changing how they are powered. The stock Sienna powers the dash tweeter and door woofer off a single channel.

I’m converting this to active bi-amplification. I’ll use a 4-channel amplifier to power each of the four front speakers individually. This lets me use active crossovers to send perfectly filtered frequencies to specifically chosen drivers.

The Gear List

Taking a page directly from ‘cowdog360’s’ recommendations for high-value performers, here is the loadout:

The Brains (Amp): Kicker KEY200.4. The “AI” amp. It’s tiny, powerful (50W x 4), and includes a microphone for auto-EQ and time alignment.

Dash Speakers (Mid-Range): CDT Audio Unity 8.0. While many use Audiofrogs here, ‘cowdog360’ pointed out these CDTs as a “giant killer” alternative at nearly half the price. They are “wideband” speakers, meaning they handle virtually all vocals and highs without needing a separate tweeter.

Door Speakers (Woofer): CDT Audio CL-69 SUB CF. These are 6×9″ carbon-fiber dedicated subwoofers. Since I’m not running a big box in the trunk, these will handle all the mid-bass and low-end duties right in the doors.

Installation Notes

1. Mounting the CDTs

This wasn’t exactly a drop-in affair.

Dash: The CDT Unity 8.0s sound amazing, but they don’t have factory Toyota mounting tabs. I had to get creative with some universal backstraps (some forum members 3D print custom mounts) to get them secure under the factory grilles.

Doors: The CDT Carbon Fiber woofers are heavy beasts. Flimsy plastic adapters won’t cut it. I followed the forum advice and used heavy-duty HDPE speaker adapters (like those from Tacotunes) to make sure these woofers had a solid foundation to kick hard without rattling the door.

2. The Bi-Amp Wiring

Because Toyota hides the splitter for the front speakers deep in the dash, you can’t easily use the factory wiring for standard bi-amping.

I used the existing factory wiring to feed the powerful new door woofers (Channels 3 & 4).

I had to run new speaker wire from the Kicker amp directly up to the dash locations for the Unity 8.0s (Channels 1 & 2).

3. The “AI” Tuning

Once installed, I utilized the Kicker KEY’s auto-setup. You plug in the included microphone, play a specific pink noise track, and let the amp do its thing. It analyzes the response of the CDT drivers in the Sienna’s unique interior and automatically sets the EQ, time delay, and crossovers.

The Results

The combination of the CDT Carbon woofers and Unity widebands is incredible.

The Unity 8.0s on the dash raise the soundstage right to eye level—vocals are crystal clear and centered. Meanwhile, those carbon fiber 6x9s in the doors provide shockingly deep, tight bass that makes you think there’s a small sub hidden somewhere in the back.

It’s a stealth installation that looks 100% stock but sounds completely aftermarket. Huge thanks to the SiennaChat community for the roadmap!

They say Toyotas run forever, and usually, they’re right. But apparently, the stock shock absorbers on my 2021 Sienna XSE

They say Toyotas run forever, and usually, they’re right. But apparently, the stock shock absorbers on my 2021 Sienna XSE didn’t get the memo.

At just 35,900 miles—barely out of the bumper-to-bumper warranty period—the ride quality suddenly took a nosedive. We went from a smooth “Dad-Van” cruise to a bouncy castle every time we hit a mild dip in the road. A quick inspection confirmed the worst: the stock shocks were blown.

I was pretty frustrated. You don’t expect major suspension components to fail that early on a modern Toyota. I was facing a tough choice: overpay at the dealership for the same OEM parts that just failed me, or use this as an excuse to upgrade.

Enter VKGarage

While hunting for alternatives, I got connected with VKGarage. Not only did they know exactly what I was dealing with, but they also had the perfect solution that wouldn’t completely drain the wallet.

They had a set of used Megan Racing coilovers available. I’ve used Megan parts on previous builds; they are solid street coilovers that offer ride height adjustability and a definite handling improvement over the floaty stock suspension.

The Deal

We struck a deal that was too good to pass up: $1,000 for the coilovers, completely installed.

Considering a dealership would likely charge more than that just for OEM replacement parts and labor, this was a no-brainer. I swapped out broken factory parts for a legitimate suspension upgrade.

The Verdict

The van sits nicer now—a little lower, a lot meaner—and the floatiness is completely gone. It feels planted in corners without being too harsh for daily family hauling duties. Sometimes parts breaking is just the universe telling you it’s time to mod.

Big shout out to VKGarage for hooking up the deal and getting the Dad-Van back on the road, better than before.

I currently use a data tracking software called TeslaFi which allows me to track all my drives with my teslas. As

I currently use a data tracking software called TeslaFi which allows me to track all my drives with my teslas.
As an engineer it gives me lots of insight into all the metrics for all the modifications I did to my car and how it affects my range.

But temperature seems to affect the range I can get from the car. Here is the data from my Model Y over the last 10,000 Miles

Cold weather can have a notable impact on the range of electric vehicles, including Teslas. Here are several reasons why cold temperatures can affect the range of a Tesla:

Battery Efficiency:

Batteries have optimal temperature to deliver and recieve energy which is why teslas generally precondition when charging but as seen by outside temperature affects the range efficiency which I have shown above.

Heating Systems:

Depending on the years of the Tesla you may own it will have different types of heaters, 2018-2020 Model 3’s came with a resistive heater which are not as efficient as the the 2021+ Model 3’s that are equipped with heat pumps. All Model Y’s are the first to be equipped with heat pumps which show better efficiency in general.

Regenerative Braking:

Regen works best when the vehicle isn’t fully charged, for example when the battery is at 100% it cannot utilize any regen braking since the battery is full.

Tire Pressure:

Cold temperatures can cause a decrease in tire pressure. Properly inflated tires are crucial for maximizing efficiency and range. It’s essential to regularly check and maintain tire pressure, especially in colder climates.

Battery Preconditioning:

I am not sure how preconditioning affects the battery efficiency but it usually kicks on when you choose the tesla supercharger as your destination where the vehicle starts to warm up the battery so it can take as much charge from the super charger as possible. But this also uses energy to warm up the battery.

To mitigate the impact of cold weather on range, Tesla and other electric vehicle manufacturers often implement various technologies and features. For example, Tesla vehicles allow owners to precondition the battery and cabin while the vehicle is still plugged in, using electricity from the grid instead of the battery.

Keep in mind that the extent of the range reduction depends on several factors, including the severity of the cold weather, driving habits, and specific model of Tesla. If you live in a colder climate, it’s advisable to plan for reduced range during winter months and take steps to optimize efficiency, such as preheating the vehicle while it’s still connected to a charger.

I sold my 20″ Model 3 Performance wheels that were powder coated since I bought some forged Aspira wheels. But

I sold my 20″ Model 3 Performance wheels that were powder coated since I bought some forged Aspira wheels. But I needed to have some spare wheels that would clear my Model 3 Performance rear calipers.

So I found some cheap 2018+ Model 3 Performance sport wheels that needed some TLC.

PlastiDipping your car wheels is a popular and cost-effective way to customize their appearance. Whether you want to change the color, add a matte finish, or protect your wheels from road debris, PlastiDip offers a versatile solution. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through the process of PlastiDipping your car wheels, ensuring a professional-looking finish.

Materials Needed:

Plastidip Anthracite Grey spray cans (number of cans depends on the size of your wheels and the desired finish)

Wheel cleaner and degreaser

Masking tape

Plastic bags or garbage bags

Plastic sheeting or newspaper

Microfiber towels or lint-free cloths

Jack and jack stands

Wheel cleaner brush

Gloves

Respirator or mask for personal protection

Step 1: Prepare Your Work Area

Before you begin, find a well-ventilated and dust-free space to work. PlastiDip is sensitive to contaminants, so a clean environment is crucial. Cover the surrounding areas with plastic sheeting or newspaper to protect against overspray.

Step 2: Clean the Wheels

Thoroughly clean your wheels with a wheel cleaner and degreaser. Remove any dirt, brake dust, or grease using a wheel cleaner brush. Ensure that the wheels are completely dry before proceeding.

Step 3: Jack Up the Car

Use a jack to lift the car and secure it with jack stands. Ensure that the car is stable and won’t move during the PlastiDipping process.

Step 4: Mask Off the Tires

Using masking tape, carefully mask off the tire and any other areas you don’t want to be coated with PlastiDip. Cover the tire surface with plastic bags or garbage bags, securing them with tape to protect them from overspray.

Step 5: Test Spray

Before applying PlastiDip to the wheels, perform a test spray on a small, inconspicuous area. This helps ensure that the spray nozzle is functioning correctly and gives you a feel for the spraying distance.

Step 6: Apply the First Coat

Hold the PlastiDip spray can about 6-8 inches away from the wheel’s surface and apply the first light coat. Start spraying away from the wheel, then move across the surface in a sweeping motion. Allow the first coat to dry for about 15-30 minutes.

Step 7: Apply Additional Coats

Repeat the spraying process, applying additional coats until you achieve the desired color and finish. Typically, 4-6 coats are recommended for full coverage. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next one.

Step 8: Peel Off the Overspray

Once the final coat is dry to the touch, carefully peel off the masking tape and plastic bags from the tires. This should be done before the PlastiDip fully cures to ensure clean and smooth edges.

Step 9: Let it Cure

Allow the PlastiDip to cure for at least 24 hours before driving the car. This ensures a durable and long-lasting finish.

Step 10: Reinstall the Wheels

After the PlastiDip has fully cured, lower the car from the jack stands and reinstall the wheels.

Unleashing Power and Convenience: A Comprehensive Review of the QuickJack BL-5000 In the world of automotive enthusiasts and DIY mechanics,

Unleashing Power and Convenience: A Comprehensive Review of the QuickJack BL-5000

In the world of automotive enthusiasts and DIY mechanics, finding tools that balance power, convenience, and safety is paramount. One such tool that has gained significant attention is the QuickJack BL-5000, a portable car lift designed to make vehicle maintenance and repairs more accessible for everyone. In this review, we’ll delve into the features, performance, and overall value of the QuickJack BL-5000.

To help with working on my Teslas I invested in a quick jack BL-5000EXT with some low profile blocks. Since I lowered the model 3, it was very hard to use the Rennstands since I had to drive the car onto some pads to lift the car 1/2″ taller before the rennstands could clear. This made it easier to lift the car within 10 mins. Having the right tools makes life much easier, with this I can do my own tire rotations, suspension work and brake work

Portability and Setup

One of the standout features of the QuickJack BL-5000 is its portability. Traditional car lifts can be bulky and require a dedicated space, but the BL-5000 is designed to be compact and easily transportable. The system consists of two lightweight frames and a hydraulic power unit, making it possible for users to set up a lifting platform in minutes.

The setup process is surprisingly straightforward. The frames simply slide under the vehicle, positioning the lift points at the recommended areas. The hydraulic power unit is then connected, and with the push of a button, the QuickJack effortlessly lifts the vehicle off the ground. This simplicity is a game-changer for home mechanics who might not have the space or budget for a permanent lift.

Capacity and Adaptability

The BL-5000 boasts an impressive lifting capacity of 5,000 pounds, making it suitable for a wide range of vehicles, from compact cars to light trucks. The lift height can reach up to 17.2 inches, providing ample space for various maintenance tasks. The adaptability of the QuickJack is further enhanced by its adjustable lift points, allowing users to customize the setup based on their specific vehicle.

Safety Features

Safety is a top priority when working with any lifting equipment, and QuickJack doesn’t disappoint in this regard. The automatic safety locks engage as the lift rises, ensuring that the vehicle remains securely in place. The frames are made from durable steel, providing stability and support during operation. Additionally, the hydraulic power unit features a built-in flow divider for precise control over the descent of the lift, preventing sudden drops.

Performance in Action

The true test of any automotive tool lies in its performance during real-world applications. The QuickJack BL-5000 shines in this aspect, providing a stable and reliable platform for various tasks, including tire changes, brake repairs, and routine maintenance. The ability to quickly and easily access the underside of the vehicle transforms what could be a challenging job into a manageable and efficient process.

Conclusion

The QuickJack BL-5000 is a game-changing tool for DIY mechanics and automotive enthusiasts alike. Its portability, impressive lifting capacity, adaptability, and safety features make it a valuable addition to any home garage. While the initial investment may be higher than some other lifting options, the convenience and ease of use offered by the QuickJack are well worth it for those looking to elevate their automotive maintenance experience. Whether you’re a seasoned mechanic or a hobbyist, the QuickJack BL-5000 is a reliable and powerful tool that delivers on its promises.

My Tesla Model 3 BBK on the cheap using Brembo 6 Piston calipers from CTS-V

Transform Your Tesla Model 3/Y: A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing CTS-V 6 Piston Calipers with GiroDisc Rotors

After discovering an exciting group buy offering an affordable brake upgrade for the Tesla Model 3, I embarked on a project that would enhance both performance and aesthetics. The heart of this upgrade involved utilizing AC/Delco Brembo 6-piston brake calipers sourced from the Cadillac CTS-V, paired with custom top hats and rotors from GiroDisc.

Here’s a breakdown of the installation process:

Research and Parts Acquisition:

Delve into the group buy details and opt for the AC/Delco Brembo 6-piston brake calipers from the Cadillac CTS-V. For the front, choose custom GiroDisc rotors, ensuring compatibility with your Tesla Model 3.

Parts Sourcing:

Source the necessary components, such as the Corvette Z06 calipers and custom GiroDisc rotors, from reliable suppliers, with Amazon being a convenient option.

Bolt Modification:

Recognize that the Model 3 knuckles accept M12 bolts, while the Brembo calipers require M14 bolts. Modify the caliper mounting holes to accommodate the standard M14 bolts, ensuring a secure fit and optimal performance.

Caliper Enhancement:

Elevate the visual appeal of your brake setup by painting the calipers with a durable 2k red spray paint. This not only provides a customized touch but also complements the aesthetics of the Brembo calipers. For a finishing touch, add Tesla decals to the calipers.

Kit Availability:

The upgraded brake kit, comprising the AC/Delco Brembo calipers, custom GiroDisc rotors, and enhanced calipers, is now conveniently available as a kit from Emotive Engineering. This streamlines the process for fellow enthusiasts looking to replicate the upgrade on their Model 3 or Model Y.

By following these steps, you can achieve a significant enhancement in braking performance and visual appeal for your Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. The combination of CTS-V 6-piston calipers and GiroDisc rotors not only elevates stopping power but also adds a touch of customization to your electric vehicle.

These can be now purchased from Emotive Engineering as a kit.

In March 2023, my automotive journey took an exhilarating turn when I acquired a 2023 Model Y Performance in Corte Madera. Eager to make it uniquely mine, I delved into a series of carefully curated modifications that seamlessly blended style, performance, and functionality.

Performance Precision: Tein Flex Z coilovers and MPP Rear Camber Arms To ensure a dynamic driving experience, I entrusted ZEVCentric in Fremont with the installation of Tein Flex Z coilovers and MPP rear camber arms. The result? A harmonious balance between responsive handling and a comfortable ride.

Crystal Clear Aesthetics: 3M Crystalline 50% Tint Enhancing both style and comfort, Quality Glass and Tint in Santa Clara applied a 3M Crystalline 50% tint all around. This not only adds a sleek aesthetic but also contributes to a cooler and more private interior.

Preservation Perfection: Full Front PPF by The Werkshop Protecting the beauty of my Model Y, The Werkshop in Burlingame applied a full front paint protection film (PPF). This invisible shield safeguards against road debris and ensures a pristine exterior.

Wheel Elegance: Aspira Forged AF10 Sub2s on Stock Continental Tires Upgrading the wheels to 19″ x 9.5 Aspira Forged AF10 Sub2s while retaining the stock 19″ Continental OEM Tires, I achieved a perfect balance of performance and style, making a statement on every road.

Aero Enhancements: Adro CF Rear and Front Spoilers Injecting a touch of carbon fiber flair, I added an Adro CF Rear spoiler for a sporty aesthetic and a stylish “Adro” CF style front spoiler sourced from eBay, creating a cohesive and aerodynamic look.

Tech Upgrades: Hannshow Powered Frunk by EVMods Bringing a futuristic touch to the Model Y, EVMods installed the Hannshow powered frunk, offering a convenient and sleek solution for accessing the front trunk.

Interior Comfort: 3Dmax Spider Floor Mats From Amazon, I incorporated 3Dmax spider floor mats to protect and elevate the interior. These mats offer a perfect blend of style and practicality.

Signature Details: Metal Black Tesla Emblems and Rear Trunk Side Organizer Boxes Rounding out the modifications, I personalized the exterior with Metal Black Tesla Emblems, Rear Black Dual Motor Emblems, adding a sleek touch. Inside, Rear Trunk Side Organizer Boxes enhance storage efficiency, striking the perfect balance between form and function.

This recent project is more than just a series of upgrades; it’s a reflection of my passion for fine-tuning every aspect of my Model Y. With a harmonious blend of performance enhancements, aesthetic upgrades, and thoughtful touches, my Model Y now stands as a personalized masterpiece, ready to turn heads on every journey.

Unveiling the Evolution: My Journey Transforming a Tesla Model 3 into a Track-Ready Powerhouse

In December 2019, I welcomed a Tesla Model 3 into my life, setting the stage for a thrilling EV project that would redefine its capabilities on the track. From sleek aesthetics to jaw-dropping performance enhancements, every modification was a step towards crafting my dream electric vehicle.

1. Rear Carbon Fiber Spoiler:

The transformation kicked off with a touch of aerodynamic finesse. Installing a rear carbon fiber spoiler from T-Sportline not only added a sporty flair but also subtly enhanced the car’s downforce for improved track performance.

2. Tesla Sport Wheels:

Elevating the Model 3’s aesthetics, I acquired 20” Tesla Sport wheels through a serendipitous Craigslist find. To align with the 2020 model’s signature style, I entrusted OCDetailing in Fremont, CA, to powder-coat them in a striking satin grey finish. The result? A seamless integration of performance and style.

3. Eibach Lowering Springs:

Achieving the coveted Model 3 performance stance was made possible with the installation of Eibach lowering springs. The lowered profile not only enhances the car’s visual appeal but also contributes to a more responsive and agile track experience.

4. Tesla Acceleration Boost:

Taking performance to the next level, I opted for the Tesla Acceleration Boost, unlocking the true potential of my Model 3. This upgrade shaved off valuable seconds, catapulting the 0-60 time from 4.2 to an exhilarating 3.8 seconds, making every acceleration a thrill.

5. Ikon Front Lip in Polypropylene:

Embracing a more aggressive aesthetic, I integrated an Ikon front lip in Polypropylene. Beyond its visual impact, this addition enhances aerodynamics, ensuring that every curve on the track is met with precision and style.

6. Chrome Delete for the Panda Look

No track-ready Model 3 is complete without the iconic “panda” look. A meticulous chrome delete was performed, giving the car a distinct black-and-white contrast that’s both bold and eye-catching.

As I reflect on my first EV project, the journey from a standard Model 3 to a track-inspired powerhouse has been nothing short of exhilarating. Each modification was carefully chosen to not only enhance performance but also create a visually striking masterpiece on wheels. The track awaits, and my transformed Model 3 is ready to leave a trail of electric excitement in its wake.
